Re: Canon Puncturing
When you play around in panfandoms, you always run into the awkward "if my character turns on the TV or a movie, will they be able to see their lives play out?", "if my character goes to the library, will they be able to read their life's story?"
As a general rule of thumb, I like to have a reason for any and all canon puncturing that extends beyond "wouldn't it be funny if..." because I tend to play characters who obsess and feel marginalized when they discover they're fictional. It affects them in ways that the other player may not consider when they casually mention, "Oh, you're from the Harry Potter world, aren't you? How was that?"
However, it really depends on the situation in which it comes up. Here are a couple of examples of the sort of canon puncturing that I am okay with.
Mistaken Identity: Totally fine. Does my Barney Stinson (How I Met Your Mother) remind your Will Schuester (Glee) of Bryan Ryan? Or maybe my River Tam (Firefly) reminds your John Connor (Terminator) of Cameron Phillips? Have at! Don't expect my pups to necessarily know who you're talking about though.
Crossover: Does your Starfleet crewmember remember a time just after a devastating war when a fleet of vessels took off in search of new life on other planets? (Firefly) Do they cringe when they hear of the planet Pandora? (Avatar) If you can find a logical reason to meld your character's universe into my character's universe, please go ahead and do so.
Basically, be subtle about it (as opposed to something like "LOLOL CULLEN! DO YOU SPARKLE? CAN I SEE?"), and relate it back to your own character's canon if you want to puncture mine. Have legitimate reasons beyond a quick lol to back up your reasonings.
There are always exceptions to this rule, and for me it really does depend on the situation whether or not I'm open to it. Please feel free to contact me to discuss you're ideas / concerns / etc about what to do. Maybe your character sees a copy of Twilight in the book store and wants to go on a rant about it in their journal, and I need to have my pups not see it / pretend it's another book that is similar. There's always ways around the problem where we can both continue to enjoy threading without causing unnecessary annoyances.
Thanks for reading XD You see now why I put up teal deer warnings.
