appearance
Luna is a very unconventional character. She has long, scraggly blond hair that ends at her waist, and eyes that are described as silvery and protuberant, giving her a look of permanent surprise. While we don't often see her out of her Ravenclaw wizarding robes, she adds a bit of flair to whatever her dress. From Butterbeer cork necklaces to Dirigible Plum earrings (which Luna says enhance the ability to accept the extraordinary), Luna makes her individual style known to the world.

skills
WITCH: Luna has Harry Potter wand waving magic. Beyond that she has some skill in Care of Magical Creatures, but that is highly disputed due to her unique beliefs in the strange creatures that are discussed in the magazine The Quibbler that her father writes for. That said, Luna is a very bright girl who picks up on things very quickly.
history
Born to Editor-In-Chief of the Quibbler, Xenophilius Lovegood, Luna was brought into the world with an extremely open mind, a vivid imagination, and an insatiable curious nature. Luna was encouraged to follow her interests – whatever they may be – and she soon discovered a fascination for nature and the world around her, which she explored through various experiments or discoveries that her parents made. Her mother, in particular, was quite the extraordinary witch – perhaps unfortunately so. When Luna was 9, one of her mother's experiments ended badly, resulting in her death. Though Luna was very upset, and still misses her mother sometimes, she accepts that this is the way life is, and is grateful for what she still has, like her father.

At age 11, Luna was accepted in Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and sorted into the Ravenclaw house. It was clear from the beginning that Luna Lovegood was not like the other children, and though many students were accepting of Luna's...oddities...her weird beliefs and strange clothing isolated her from everyone else. She was referred to as "Loony" Lovegood, and there were few students who wanted to be associated with her "insanity". This didn't bother her, however - she was content to exist in her own little world of wonder and amazement.

In her 4th year, by an interesting chance, Luna was introduced to Harry Potter. Harry - who had just recently experienced the death of a good friend that past year - was just seeing the creatures known as Thestrals for the first time (Thestrals being large winged horse-like beings that a wizard can only see when they have witnessed death). While Harry was busy thinking that he was insane, Luna - who had witnessed her mother pass away - assured him that he was not going mad. She could see them too. This odd connection between the two was a source of comfort to Harry over the course of that year, and paved the way for one of the first real friendships that Luna had experienced outside of her family.

That year was a rough year for Hogwarts and its students. Torn between the notions that Harry Potter and Dumbledore were spreading (that Lord Voldemort had risen again) and the Ministry's insistence that everything was safe, confusion reigned. More open-minded than the typical student, Luna never doubted Harry's claims that he had seen Lord Voldemort, and told him so. As such, when Harry first began to rebel against the establishment, and created a defensive team known as "Dumbledore's Army", Luna was among the first students to join the fight, showing great progress and earning Harry's praise. It was here that Luna made more true, and lasting friendships, among them Ginny Weasley, and Neville Longbottom.

At the end of her fourth year, Luna joined Harry and several others in a mad storm of the Ministry of Magic. Harry wished to save his Godfather, Sirius Black, from the clutches of Lord Voldemort and needed assistance. Luna was ready for the challenge - insisted upon it in fact - and even suggested the mode of transportation used (Thestrals). While there, she fought valiantly aside Harry and the others; in fact, she sustained the fewest injuries, though she was later put out of commission by a stunning spell.

During Luna's fifth year, Hogwarts was attacked. Luna was one of the few members of Dumbledore's army that still carried the small coin that was used to call meetings. So, when members were called forward to help defend the school, Luna was one of the first to step up and assist in any way she could. While the outcome of the battle is debatable, (the student succeeded in defending the school, but lost their Headmaster and were unable to stop the man who killed him), as one of the few members of Dumbledore's Army that came to help, Luna was an asset to the team.

In her sixth year, with Harry having departed from the school, Luna assists in the uprising of the students against Headmaster Snape and the teachers Alecto and Amycus Carrow. Among many minor catastrophes, Luna also is part of the team that attempts to break into Dumbledore Snape's office to steal the sword of Gryffindor so that they can help Harry.

As demonstrated by her style and character, Luna is an extremely open-minded, and somewhat odd girl, who follows her own path regardless of what anyone else thinks or says about her. She seems to constantly be in a dreamlike state, meaning that it is difficult to tell the difference between when she is joking, and when she is serious. As such, when she begins speaking about the fascinating life of the "Sparklarian Drattle Bug", oftentimes no one really knows if she truly believes in its existence...or if she's just having fun imagining it. This dreamlike state also causes her to appear somewhat naive and unaware, but Luna is startlingly attuned to the world around her and its inner workings. At times, she is so insightful, it almost appears as if she stumbled upon a conclusion by accident.

Luna is a caring person with motherly instincts, and is always willing to lend a hand for a good cause. Though many are frightened by her strange ways, she is fiercely loyal to those who offer her friendship and kindness. And when faced with the opportunity, Luna can be quite selfless - sacrificing her own happiness, or her own life or safety, for someone else's well being.
